This meeting will be to discuss SEVERAL issues related to Briny Ave. and the surrounding areas.

THIS ONE IS A BIG ONE!!!! The city is NOW proposing a CHANGE to the CHARTER of the CITY OF POMPANO BEACH. Here's how it reads on the agenda...

P.H. 2024-36: (PUBLIC HEARING 1ST READING) AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF POMPANO BEACH, FLORIDA, AMENDING ARTICLE XXV, SECTIONS 250, 251 AND 253 TO CHAPTER 57-174, LAWS OF FLORIDA SPECIAL ACTS OF 1957 AS SUBSEQUENTLY AMENDED AND SUPPLEMENTED, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF POMPANO BEACH, FLORIDA, TO MODIFY REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS RELATING TO CONTRACTS AND LEASES AND TO REVISE LANGUAGE TO BE CONSISTENT WITH STATE LAW AS TO USE OF ORDINANCES AND RESOLUTIONS; TO AMEND CRITERIA FOR TRANSFER OF CITY-OWNED PROPERTY TO OTHER GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES; PROVIDING THAT IF THE AMENDMENTS ARE APPROVED BY A MAJORITY OF THE VOTERS AT THE GENERAL ELECTION OF NOVEMBER 5, 2024, THEN SUCH AMENDMENTS SHALL BECOME A PART OF THE CITY’S CHARTER UPON CERTIFICATION AND ACCEPTANCE OF ELECTION RESULTS; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

And here's what it means in PLAIN ENGLISH:

THIS TAKES AWAY RIGHTS OF THE TAXPAYERS IN FAVOR OF DEVELOPERS.

The city has made some MAJOR mis-steps in approving and/or prolonging approvals for properties slated for development in Pompano Beach, which have extended approvals up to nearly 18 years - outdating what would be allowed to be build by today's standards and/or codes. Also prolonging approval of outdated variances that were granted. What does this really mean? If this gets approved, then the city will literally have carte blanche to do whatever they decide in cahoots with any developers to extend agreements, approvals, etc... and make it so they can continue to do what they want, without public input.

NO MATTER WHAT, WHETHER YOU CAN OR CANNOT ATTEND THE MEETING, YOU NEED TO EMAIL CITY OFFICIALS EXPRESSING YOUR DISAPPROVAL OF THIS BEING PASSED RIGHT NOW!

Ok, so here's what's NEW:

We need a few volunteers as we now plan to incorporate officially as a 501(c)(4) organization. This will allow us to collect donations, and essentially become an official "lobbying" group, which will make our voice heard a bit better in the "fray" of the city/developers/noise. We are looking for a few people who are willing to be vocal and/or supportive of this project publicly.
We need to FUNDRAISE IMMEDIATELY, WE are looking for LOCAL SPONSORS. So far, this has been a project that has operated in a grassroots function. That needs to change if we want to make a difference. Our new financial goal is $40K, which would cover attorneys fees, architect fees, and some additional operating expenses. This is NOT a HUGE expense... basically, with our EXISTING email base, if we were able to collect about $50-75 per person, we would MEET that goal.
Be on the lookout for a new introduction to our new "official" public facing team soon. We're currently transitioning and changing some hands to be more efficient. As the old adage goes, "Many Hands Make Light Work". If you have ANY interest in volunteering in ANY capacity, we WANT to hear from you! Email us at info@savepompano.com

City Meetings Calendar

Please note, the city will update the agendas before the meetings, so you can see if there is something relevant to your community/district that you may want to participate in. Keep an eye on the Planning & Zoning Agendas, Development Review Committees, Pompano Beach CRA, and of course, the Commission Meetings.

IMPORTANT!!!

The attorney that represents the Developer for both the hotel and the 580 Briny project reached out to us again, and when we asked about their intentions for a meeting, aka "what do you plan to bring to the table after reading our objections to the proposed project", the attorney responded:

"We will be meeting the requirements of the code. If you’d like to meet to discuss potential improvements on or around the site, we’d be happy to discuss and implement what we can.

If you do not want to meet, we will conduct separate outreach to neighbors."

What this says for our team is that the developers are UNWILLING to work with us on any of our concerns.

So far, any responses from city officials have explained that "their hands are tied", which is understood to mean that they have their own agenda and won't get in the way of the developers on their own.
